November 7th 2011.- The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network (RTIRN) along with the World Health Organization South-East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and The George Institute for Global Health organized the regional workshop entitled “WHO-RTIRN Regional workshop on Public Health Research on Road Traffic Injuries” to inform development of the SEARO draft regional road traffic injury research framework. The event took place in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 26th and 27th, 2011, featuring the involvement of expert facilitators and presenters from RTIRN and the SEA Region on the prevention of road traffic injury.
The workshop was attended by 24 regional guests from countries like Thailand, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and local guests from Indonesia. The workshop was attended by Dr. Chamaiparn Santikarn, WHO regional advisor for SEARO, who started the session with a state of the art presentation on the road safety situation in the SEA Region. Along with Dr. Chamaiparn, some Board members of the RTIRN, such as Dr. Olive Kobusingye, Dr. Rebecca Ivers, Dr. Hamid Soori, Dr. Alfredo Celis, and Dr. Shanthi Ameratunga participated on the workshop as well. From the SEA region Dr. Pimpa Techakamolsuk (Thailand), Dr. Fazlur Rahman (Bangladesh), Dr Witaya Chadbunchachai (Thailand), Ms. Karma Doma (Bhutan), Dr. Saman Bandara (Sri Lanka), Dr. Siriwan Santijiarakul (Thailand), Mr. Leksmono Suryo Putranto (Indonesia) and Dr. Gopalkrishna Gururaj (India) shared their experience and the work they are doing in their respective countries. Dr. Gururaj, a former RTIRN Board member is leading work on the research strategy for the SEA region.
The event was a great opportunity to interact and to involve participants to understand the crucial contribution and application of research in the prevention of road traffic injuries and the importance of networking to aid their research efforts.

Meeting of the RTIRN Board.
On October 28th, a RTIRN Board meeting took place in Jakarta, Indonesia. At this meeting, the Secretariat presented its six-month report of activities followed by an analysis of regional workshop.
Some potential funding opportunities to carry on the Network’s activities for the future were discussed in detail. Additionally the creation of a newsletter contribution award was discussed; this will reward the best contribution published on the RTIRN newsletter of 2011. Stay tuned for more information on this.
A call for nominations for one vacant position on the board will be announced soon.
Also the Board approved the renewal of the current Secretariat for the next period 2012-2013. We are very happy to continue our work in the RTIRN and we look forward to continuing working with all of you, our RTIRN community.
