RTIRN PARALLEL SESSION AT THE 10TH WORLD CONFERENCE ON INJURY PREVENTION & SAFETY PROMOTION

On Wednesday, September 22nd of 2010; the RTIRN parallel session took place at the 10th World Conference on Injury Prevention & Safety Promotion in London, England. The session was a total success; over 120 people attended the session including all 22 researchers that received an scholarship from the RTIRN to attend the World’s Conference. According to the program the presentations were as follows:
Dr. Adnand Hyder (current Chair of the RTIRN) started the event welcoming all attendees to the RTIRN parallel session.Dr. Ricardo Perez (RTIRN Secretary) continued with a brief introduction to the RTIRN and the current status of the Network. See presentationThe event was followed by the presentation of two representatives of the Juniors (Fernando Poo see presentation) and Senior (Rafael Consuji see presentation) research programs. Each representative talked about, how these projects influenced them personally and professionally and provided some of the results obtained from their research.

Results from the Multi Center Study on Non-standard helmet use were also presented by Dr. Adnan in representation of Dr. Robyn Norton (RTIRN Chair Emeretus). He talked about the objectives of this study, and provided some relevant results derived from the study. Findings suggest that wide-spread use of non-standard helmets in LMIC, may limit the potential gains of helmet use programs; and thus parallel legislation and enforcement on non-standard helmets, and strategies aimed at reducing the costs of standard helmets will be required to maximize the effects of existing campaigns ( See presentation).

Also the former RTIRN Secretary Dr. Junaid Razzak talked about the capacity development of the RTIRN. He highlighted how the RTIRN has created opportunities for researchers from low and middle income countries. He then talked about his experience during the time he spent as Secretariat of the RTIRN and how this benefited his development. See presentation

At the end the RTIRN vice-chair, Dr. Olive Kobusingye, coordinated a very enriching discussion session.
The RTIRN parallel session was a huge success. We at the RTIRN would like to thank all the people that attended the parallel session. Without them this wouldn’t have been possible. Many Thanks!
