RTIRN Workshop Discusses Capacity Development at Australia Injury Prevention Conference!

RTIRN hosted a pe-conference workshop in Brisbane at the annual meeting of the Australia Injury Prevention Network (AIPN) Conference on 2 Nov 2011. The workshop focused on understanding the nature of the Road Traffic Injury (RTI) burden in low and middle income countries from mortality to disability, followed by intense discussions around mechanisms and collaborations for capacity development. Dr. Adnan Hyder (Chair), Dr. Rebecca Ivers (Board member) and Dr. Shanthi Ameratunga (Board member) participated with partners from Australia, Malaysia and Iran attending the half-day workshop.

The workshop identified the following issues for further work and discussion by RTIRN partners:
•need for understanding the disability impact and experiences of those affected by RTI in LMIC
•defining better ways for capacity development in RTI research and practice
•exploring creative mechanisms for funding capacity development through transport, health and development sectors

RTIRN partners are encouraged to initiate discussions on these issues on our website (www.rtirn.net) and contribute to the upcoming (Jan-Mar 2012) newsletter on ‘capacity development’.
