October 19th 2012.- The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network along with the George Institute for Global Health, with financial support from The Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), organized a two day workshop for the Asia Pacific region. The event took place at the Te Raukura, also known as “Wharewaka” located on the city of Wellington, New Zealand on September 30th and October 1st, 2012. The event featured the involvement of expert facilitators and presenters from RTIRN and the Asia Pacific region.
The main theme of the RTIRN workshop was “Road Safety” including the burden of road traffic injuries, effective interventions to address the problem and the different activities each country is implementing under the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
The workshop had an attendance of 25 people on the first day and 38 people on the second day. The workshop was also open to all SAFETY 2012 world conference attendees that were interested in the workshop. Also some RTIRN board members were present Dr. Hyder, Dr. Ivers and Dr. Ameratunga. Some of the countries that participated were New Zealand, Australia, Samoa, Tonga, USA, Fiji, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Canada, Pakistan, Nepal, Mexico and United Kingdom among others.

Participants were sensitized to potentially appropriate and effective road safety interventions to reduce the burden of RTI in their own countries. They also became familiar with the importance of monitoring and evaluating activities being implemented in their home countries in the context of the Decade of Action for road safety. The workshop highlighted the need for, and importance of including disability programs in road safety efforts. Having a representative of disable people added value to this and sensitize people towards working on disability inclusion in their own settings. With this effort, the RTIRN network will become stronger in the region and hopefully influence policy networks in the region
The event was a great opportunity to interact and to involve participants to understand the crucial contribution and application of research in the prevention of road traffic injuries and the importance of networking to aid their research efforts.
RTIRN would like to thank the AusAID ISSS program authorities and The George Institute for Global Health for this great opportunity and support they kindly provided to make this regional workshop a reality.
