April 18, 2011 – The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network (RTIRN) received The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award on April 11 during the UN Road Safety Collaboration meeting in London. Dr. Adnan Hyder, board chairman for RTIRN and director of the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Network, and Dr. Margie Peden of the World Health Organization, accepted the award from The Prince Michael.
“Road safety research is absolutely vital in developing road safety policy,” said Dr. Adnan Hyder. “I am both honored and grateful that RTIRN has been recognized by the international community for our role in encouraging research in this important area of public health.”
Since 1987, The Prince Michael International Road Safety Awards have given public recognition to institutions that have improved road safety throughout the world. Each year, the most outstanding examples of international road safety achievements, innovations and initiatives are chosen. Presenting the award, His Royal Highness said “The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network is a remarkable innovation which brings together more than five hundred institutions and experts to share knowledge on road injury solutions from across the world. It has already proved its worth in helping to make the case for a Decade of Action for Road Safety. Now it is poised to grow even further”. The awards are organized and administered by RoadSafe, a road safety organization in Great Britain.
RTIRN would like to thank HRH Prince Michael of Kent, RoadSafe; current and previous funders; the Global Forum for Health Research; the Global Road Safety Facility of the World Bank; the Department of Violence, Injuries and Disability of the World Health Organization; the George Institute for Global Health; and all of our partners for contributing to the ongoing success of RTIRN.
