Press Release: Road safety education should be mandatory to minimize accidents

Social Research and Development Organization (SRDO) has showed serious concern over the loss of precious lives in a road accident in Salgiran, near Muree on 8th January 2014.

According to reports, displayed and published in various newspapers and news channels, 15 people were died and a number of injured in a tragic bus accident. The officials of traffic police opined that the accident occurred because the bus was speeding.

Road accidents is an international problem, prevalent in poor, developing and developed countries. However, it is a fact that majority of accidents occur in low and middle income countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) mentioned the following.
  • About 1.24 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes.
  • 91% of the world’s fatalities on the roads occur in low-income and middle-income countries, even though these countries have approximately half of the world’s vehicles.

Pakistan faces serious road accident problem as it is estimated that every year hundreds of people died in road accidents in Pakistan. Additionally, the number of road deaths per 10,000 vehicles in the country is also very high.

Lack of education, safety standards, proper training and technology are the basic reasons for the rise in road accidents in Pakistan. Experts also believe that poor implementation of traffic rules, over speeding, reckless driving and unawareness about basic traffic rules are some of the major factors responsible for the growing number of accidents in the country.

It is pertinent to mention that road accidents not only killed and injured many people but economic cost of road accidents and injuries is also very high. However, despite of economic lost road safety education is not a prioritized area of concern for the government.

  • Strict implementation of traffic laws;
  • Mandatory education and training of public transport drivers;
  • Refresher courses for old drivers on safe driving;
  • Road safety trainings and courses for new drivers;
  • Awareness raising among school children on traffic rules;
  • Safe driving courses for school-van drivers;
  • Awareness about safe-driving principles through media;
  • Regular inspection of public transport;
  • Regular inspection of CNG cylinders; and
  • Awareness raising programs and material for pedestrians.

Social Research and Development Organization (SRDO), has been working on road safety issues for a long time. The organization provides road safety trainings to a number of drivers in different parts of the country. Additionally, SRDO organizes programs in communities and schools to raises awareness especially among children about road safety and traffic rules.
