The Road Traffic Injury Research Network (RTIRN) is an independent network of researchers, scientists, practitioners, and policy makers focused on the promotion, conduct and utilization of evidencein order to reduce the global burden of road traffic injuries, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). RTIRN operates as a free standing forum and the Board of RTIRN is its highest policy and decision-making body.
The network’s Secretariat moved to Kampala, Uganda in March 2017. Secretariats have previously been hosted in Thailand, Pakistan, Mexico, Sri Lankaand Viet Nam. Dr Olive Kobusingye (Makerere University, Uganda, has been the Board Chair since September 2016, following previous Chairs Prof. Adnan Hyder (Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health) and Prof. Robyn Norton (The George Institute, Australia). Dr Margie Peden from The George Institute UK is the vice-Chair supported by Drs Nahn Tran (WHO, Switzerland), Abdul Bachani (Kenya/USA), Eugenia Rodrigues (Brazil / USA), Shaw Voon Wong (Malaysia), and Cristina Inclan (Mexico).
As of 2020, the network has 1125 partners, representing 114 countries. Among them, 16.6% are from low-income countries; 37.2% from low-middle income countries; 33.2% from upper-middle income countries; and the rest from high-income countries. Africa (24.6%) has the most members, followed by the Americas (21.6%).
