Decade of action for road safety in the Islamic Republic of Iran- May 2014

Some figures on road traffic injuries(RTIs) in Iran shows that Iran has the third largest population in Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) with about 13% of total population of EMR, greatest number of vehicles in EMR with about 20 657 627 (32% of total vehicles in the region, high percentage of 2-3 wheels vehicles. Reported road traffic fatalities (2010–2011 Iranian Calendar) was 23249 (about 30% of all fatal injuries of the region), high fatal RTIs per 10000 vehicles of 11.3 and reported non-fatal road traffic injuries with 685 611.

RTIs is one of the top priorities of public health and governmental concerns now and great attempts has been started at local and national level to reduce the morbidity and mortality of RTIs. Decade of action for road safety has been well addressed by relevant policy and decision-makers of Iran. The first scientific meeting on decade of action for road safety will be held in Tehran the capital of Islamic Republic of Iran in May 2014. The organizers are the Iranian Society of Thinkers on Road Safety with collaboration of Traffic Police of Iran, Ministry of Health of Iran, and some international and national organizations and agencies.

In this meeting 5 panels according to 5 pillars of decade of action including road safety management, safer roads and mobility, safer vehicles, safer road users and post-crash response will be presents. Furthermore, tens of keynote speakers, oral speeches and posters will be presented.
