Road Traffic Injuries Prevention and Rescue Initiative, a Road Safety focused Non-Governmental Organization has inaugurated the Road Safety Vanguard of the organization in Abia State, aimed at complimenting government efforts in the safety of road users in Abia State.
The inauguration was held on the 21st of October 2011 at the Abia town hall in Umuahia, the State capital. The Deputy Governor of Abia State, Mr. Ananaba, was represented by Mr. Basil Ahurunanya, Director of Administration in the State Ministry of Works and Transport, while the Commissioner of Police Abia State was represented by ASP Okoro and the Sector Commander of FRSC was ably represented by Ms Ogbonnaya.
The Federal, State and FCT government generates billions of Naira from road transport revenue but are lacking in the investment of road safety initiatives. Development partners and some International Organizations such as the United Nations, World Bank and World Health Organization have been in the vanguard of encouraging States to improve road safety efforts to reduce the increasing rate of Road Traffic Injuries, Injuries and Deaths but Nigeria has been at the back seat of Nations that have initiated and are implementing far reaching initiatives to save lives of road users.
As the World mark the 2011 World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims, Nigeria government must rise to the challenge of road traffic injuries prevention and implement various United Nations resolutions on Road Safety to save lives of road users.
