Announcement of RTIRN Small Research Grants

The Road Traffic Injury Research Network is pleased to announce the availability of small research grants; specifically, research on safe routes to school. Five successful applicants will receive a maximum of €5,000 each, depending on the nature and scope of the proposed work.

The purpose of these RTIRN small grants is to promote road safety research in low- and middle-income countries among early career researchers, and to build more evidence for safer routes to school for children across the world.

Eligibility

Applicants eligible for the funding under this grant must be registered as an RTIRN partner and resident or working in a low- or middle-income country.

Scope: The proposed research must address interventions to keep children safe on their way to and from school utilizing an implementation science approach to assess good research practices and/or the feasibility and applicability of known good practices. The research must be conducted within 1 year and needs to be COVID-19 safe.

Application format

Applicants should submit an eight-page (maximum) research proposal relevant to the research area of interest. Please use the template provided. Also please bear in mind the COVID-19 situation in your country and what your research/ethics boards are suggesting currently.

The application must include the following sections:


1. Project Summary (half page or less)

2. Rationale & background information

3. Study goals and objectives

4. Methodology

5. Activity Schedule including timeline 2

6. Expected Outcomes of the Study

7. Budget

8. References (maximum of 10)

Proposals must be written in the template provided. Please use a Font size 12 and 1.5 spacing.

In addition, applicants should submit a brief curriculum vita (bio), maximum 250 words, and provide two professionally relevant referees. One of the references should preferably be a supervisor or academic advisor who supports the proposal.

Selection

The applications will be evaluated by a multi-disciplinary group of faculty. Proposals will be assessed on their relevance to the required scope, originality, technical quality, and the feasibility of the research given the budget and timeframe. All decisions will be final.

Post Award Rules

All research with human subjects must provide certification from the Research Ethics Committees or IRBs in the respective country. Full funding will not be released without this certification.

Reporting

A final report (in the form of a draft manuscript of 10 pages and additional tables/figures) will be due 30 days after completion of the project.
