RTIRN regional workshop “Evaluation of Road Safety Interventions: Key Component of the Global Decade of Action”

April 5th 2013.- The Road Traffic Injuries Research Network with financial support from The Global Road Safety Fund and the Johns Hopkins International Injury Research Unit, organized a two day workshop for the South America region. The event took place in the city of Curitiba (Brazil) on February 26th and 27th, 2013. The event featured the involvement of expert facilitators and presenters from RTIRN, PAHO and the South American region.

The main theme of the RTIRN workshop was the evaluation of road safety interventions done by the countries of South America and also the Exchange of experiences and knowledge generated in the subject of road safety, particularly on the different activities each country is implementing under the Decade of Action for Road Safety.

The workshop had an attendance of 30 people on the first day and 28 people on the second day. Some of the countries that participated were Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Ecuador, USA and Mexico.

Participants were sensitized to potentially appropriate and effective road safety interventions to reduce the burden of RTI in their own countries. They also became familiar with the importance of monitoring and evaluating activities being implemented in their home countries in the context of the Decade of Action for road safety.

Our workshop was consistent with the Global Plan of the Decade of Action and the Foundations objective of promoting research and disseminating results of research carried out in the region and worldwide. Participants were sensitized to potentially appropriate and effective road safety interventions to reduce the burden of RTI in their own countries. They also became familiar with the importance of monitoring and evaluating activities being implemented in their home countries in the context of the Decade of Action for road safety. The workshop highlighted the importance of each of the countries activities on the Decade of Action. Having a representative from most of the countries in the Region added great value to the workshop

The event was a great opportunity to interact and to involve participants to understand the crucial contribution and application of research in the prevention of road traffic injuries and the importance of networking to aid their research efforts.
